vMotion wizard fails when migrating a virtual machine from an ESX 3.x host to an ESX 4.0 host
Symptoms
- The vMotion Wizard fails
- You cannot use the the vMotion Wizard to migrate a virtual machine from an ESX 3.x host to an ESX 4.0 host
- You see the error:
The default device 'Video Card' is configured with settings which are incompatible with the default settings on the target host.
Resolution
To vMotion a virtual machine from an ESX 3.x host to an ESX 4.0 host, the virtual machine's virtual hardware version must be at version 4 or higher. If it is not, the ESX 4.0 validation process flags this and the vMotion operation fails.
Note: VMware supports upgrade vMotion (sometimes called DMotion) for a Virtual Hardware 3 version virtual machine when it is on an ESX 2.5.5 host.
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
Method 1
- Ensure that you are using the latest version of VMware Tools. For more information, see VMware Tools Installation Guide Operating System Specific Packages.
- Power off the virtual machine on the ESX 3.x host.
- Use cold migration to move it to the ESX 4 host.
- Upgrade the virtual hardware to version 7 by right-clicking on the virtual machine and choosing Upgrade Virtual Hardware.
Method 2
- Ensure that you are using the latest version of VMware Tools. For more information, see VMware Tools Installation Guide Operating System Specific Packages.
- Power off the virtual machine on the ESX 3.x host.
- Upgrade the virtual hardware to version 4 by right-clicking on the virtual machine and choosing Upgrade Virtual Hardware.
- Power the virtual machine back on.
- Use the vMotion wizard to migrate the virtual machine to the ESX 4 host.
