VMware Update Manager fails with error Failed to install VMware Update Manager guest agent (1011689)

Symptoms

You may experience there symptoms:

  • Cannot scan for updates
  • When scanning virtual machines for updates you see the error:

Failed to install VMware Update Manager guest agent

  • Restarting the services on the VirtualCenter server does not help

Resolution

This issue occurs because the data flow from the virtual machine to the datastore is limited. Specifically, the isolation.tools.setinfo.disable value is set to true.

To resolve the issue, set the isolation.tools.setinfo.disable value to false in the <virtual machines>.vmx configuration file. This allows Update Manager to scan for security updates and patches successfully.

For more information on setting this value, see http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vi35_security_hardening_wp.pdf.
