Managing an ESXi host with the ESXi Management kit

Purpose

This article provides steps to download the ESXi Management kit.

Resolution

The vCenter Server Agent connects VMware ESX with the vCenter Server. ESXi does not come with a vCenter Server Agent, which means that you cannot manage an ESXi host using a vCenter Server. The ESXi Management Kit comes with a license for a vCenter Agent, but as of vSphere 4, the ESXi Management Kit has been replaced by vSphere Essentials.

If you want to manage an ESXi host with the ESXi Management Kit, download the kit with these steps:
  1. Download ESXi from www.vmware.com/download/esxi.

Note: For more information about installing ESXi, see the ESXi documentation.

  2. Download vCenter Server 2.5 and the License Server from www.vmware.com/download/vi.

Note: For more information on installing the vCenter Server and the License Server, see the vCenter documentation.

  3. Upload the ESXi Management Kit license file to the license server. For more information, see Installing ESX Server Licenses (1001383).
  4. Add the ESXi host to the Inventory.

The vCenter Server recognizes the vCenter Server Agent license and allows you to manage the ESXi host using vCenter.

Note:  The vCenter Server available in the ESXi Management Kit can handle up to three ESXi or ESX hosts.
