VMotion fails with an RDTSCP error in EVC clusters where the ESX host CPU Model is Intel 3500 series or 5500 series (Nehalem)
Symptoms
- You cannot VMotion a virtual machine
- If you try to VMotion a virtual machine, you see the error:
Unable to migrate from esx01 to esx03 Host CPU is
incompatible with the virtual machine's requirements at CPUID level 0x80000001 'edx'.
host bits: 0010:1000:0001:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000
required: 00x0:0000:0001:0000:0000:x000:0000:0000
Mismatch detected for these features:
* RDTSCP: refer to KB article 1993 for a possible solution.
Resolution
This issue is seen with Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) clusters where the ESX Host CPU Model is Intel 3500 series or 5500 series (Nehalem).
The problem occurs if ESX 3.5 Update 4 or later and vCenter Server 2.5 Update 4 or later are not installed.
Note: For more information about Intel CPUs, see Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) processor support (1003212) and VMotion CPU Compatibility Requirements for Intel Processors (1991).
To resolve this issue:
- As per the VMware Compatibility Guide ensure that any ESX in the EVC cluster with a Nehalem CPU has ESX 3.5 Update 4 or later installed.
Note: ESX hosts in the cluster that do not have a Nehalem CPU do not need to be upgraded to ESX 3.5 Update 4. However, they must meet the minimum requirements to support EVC as detailed in Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) processor support (1003212) .
- Ensure that vCenter Server 2.5 Update 4 or later is installed.
- If, having completed the steps above there are still problems with VMotion, ensure that no CPUID masks are applied to the virtual machines. If CPUID masks have been applied, reset the masks to the default:
- Power down the virtual machine.
- Right-click on the virtual machine and choose Edit Settings.
- Click the Options tab.
- Select CPUID Mask under Advanced.
- Click Advanced.
- Click Reset All to Default.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Power on the virtual machine and migrate.
