Changing the default timeout for locked dvPorts
Details
In some cases, creating a host profile with multiple service console network adapters on a vNetwork Distributed Switch prevents you from removing the vNetwork Distribued Switch or associated dvPort groups even after all service console adapters have been removed or migrated from the vNetwork Distributed Switch. This happens when vCenter reserves dvPorts for the service console adapters, but does not receive a connection from the ESX/ESXi host, which causes vCenter to give a Ports in use error when you try to remove the vNetwork Distributed Switch or dvPort group.
Solution
Before you can remove a vNetwork Distribued Switch or dvPort group, all unused dvPort reservations must time out. You can either wait for the default 24-hour timeout period before removing the vNetwork Distributed Switch or dvPort group, or temporarily change the default timeout for dvPorts to free the ports before the default 24-hour timeout period. If you change the default timeout, be sure to change it back after the ports have been freed.
To remove a vNetwork Distributed Switch or dvPort group with locked dvPorts
- In vpxd.cfg, add the line <vpxd><dvs><portReserveTimeout>10</portReserveTimeout></dvs></vpxd> and save the file.
- Restart vCenter. The default timeout is now set to ten minutes.
-
After the port reservation has timed out, remove the vNetwork Distributed Switch or dvPort group.
-
Reset the default timout by removing the line you previous added to vpxd.cfg.
-
Restart vCenter.
