ESX 4.0 hosts lose network connectivity when multiple service console interfaces are configured on subnets that use DHCP IP addresses
Details
If you have multiple service console interfaces that are connected to a virtual switch and have DHCP IP addresses on the same subnet, you might lose access to the ESX host if you remove one of the service console interfaces from the virtual switch. In this case, you might encounter the following default gateway error message: Unable to connect to MKS: failed to connect to remote server (two vswifs on the same subnet using DHCP).
Solution
To avoid losing access to the ESX host, perform the following steps:
- Configure the first service console interface network adapter with DHCP.
- In the /etc/sysconfig/network file, add the following line: GATEWAYDEV=vswifX, where X corresponds to the service console you just configured.
- Configure the second service console interface.
If you now remove the second service console interface, your connection doesn't close because the DHCP client is set to update the default gateway for only one service console interface.
