Collecting diagnostic information for VMware Converter

Purpose

VMware Technical Support routinely requests diagnostic information from you when a support request is handled. This diagnostic information contains product specific logs and configuration files from the host on which the product is run. The information is gathered using a specific script or tool for each product.
 
This article provides procedures for obtaining diagnostic information for VMware Converter.
 
The diagnostic information collected can then be uploaded to VMware Technical Support. To uniquely identify your information, use the Support Request (SR) number you received when you opened your Support Request.

Resolution

The procedure required to collect diagnostic information for VMware Converter is different for each version. Follow the section that matches your version of Converter.
 
Notes:
  • For all versions of Converter it is important to collect both client and agent logs.
  • If you are converting a virtual machine and it is powered off there will be no agent logs.

VMware Converter 3.0.x

  • To collect client logs from the Converter user interface click File > Export Logs.
  • To collect client logs from the file system of the computer running Converter look in the directory %TEMP%\vmware-temp and gather all files that begin with vmware-client.

    Note: You only need to use one of these methods.

  • To collect client logs when the Cold Clone CD is used:

    1. After the computer is booted enter a network share in the network dialog wizard. This must be done prior to any conversion.
    2. From the user interface click File > Export Logs.

      Note: If the user interface is no longer available but a network share had been specified look in the network share directory and gather all files that begin with
      vmware-client.

  • To collect agent logs from the computer that is being converted:

    • For Windows NT look in the directory %WINDIR%\vmware-temp and gather all files that begin with vmware-converter.
    • For all other versions of Windows look in the directory %WINDIR%\Temp\vmware-temp and gather all files that begin with vmware-converter.

VMware Converter Enterprise for VirtualCenter 2.5

  • To collect client logs from VirtualCenter look in the directory %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware Converter Enterprise\Logs and gather all files.
  • To collect client logs when the Cold Clone CD is used:

    1. After the computer is booted enter a network share in the network dialog wizard. This must be done prior to any conversion.
    2. From the user interface click File > Export Logs.

      Note: If the user interface is no longer available but a network share was specified look in the network share directory and gather all files that begin with
      vmware-client.

  • To collect agent logs from the computer that is being converted:

    • For Windows NT look in the directory %WINDIR%\vmware-temp and gather all files that begin with vmware-converter.
    • For all other versions of Windows look in the directory %WINDIR%\Temp\vmware-temp and gather all files that begin with vmware-converter.

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.x.x

  • To collect client and agent logs from the Converter user interface click File > Export Logs.

    Note: Unless the Converter user interface is unavailable this is the only method required to collect all logs.

  • To collect client logs from the file system of the computer that is running Converter:

    • For Windows look in the directory %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\Logs and gather all files.
    • For Linux look in the directory $HOME/.vmware/VMware vCenter Converter Standalone/Logs and gather all files.

  • To collect agent logs from the computer that is being converted:

    • For Windows look in the directory C:\Windows\Temp\vmware-temp and gather all files that begin with vmware-converter.
    • For Linux look in the directory /var/log/vmware-vcenter-converter-standalone and gather all files.
