Sysprep on Windows Server 2003 does not run

Symptoms

  • Sysprep customization does not work on VirtualCenter 2.5.x with Windows Server 2003 (32bit Edition)
  • After successful cloning of the virtual machine, the guest operating system sits at the login prompt indefinitely
  • Sysprep does not run when logging into Windows manually on the deployed template

Resolution

If the File and Printer Sharing service is not enabled for the Virtual Network Adapter TCP/IP Properties, sysprep will fail.

You must ensure that the File and Printer Sharing service is enabled for the Virtual Network Adapter TCP/IP Properties in the Template before deploying.

If enabling the File and Printer Sharing service does not solve the issue, uninstall and then reinstall the File and Printer Sharing service.
