Using a Microsoft or 3rd party software iSCSI Initiator in a VMware environment

Purpose

This document provides information about using a Microsoft iSCSI Initiator in a VMware environment.

Note: This article can also be used as a reference for all other 3rd party software iSCSI initiators.

Resolution

Using a Microsoft or 3rd Party iSCSI Initiator within a virtual machine guest operating system

3rd party software iSCSI initiators are available for download and, depending on their minimum requirements, can be successfully installed onto a supported guest operating system running in a virtual machine. If you use a 3rd party initiator in your VMware environment, see Running a Third-Party iSCSI initiator in the Virtual Machine in the SAN System Design and Deployment Guide for ESX 3.x and for ESX 4.x.

If you encounter connectivity issues using a 3rd party software iSCSI initiator to the 3rd party storage device, engage the 3rd party vendors for assistance. If the 3rd party vendors determine that the issue is due to a lack of network connectivity to the virtual machine, contact VMware for help troubleshooting assistance.

Using a Microsoft or 3rd Party Software iSCSI Initiator on a VMware Consolidated Backup Proxy Server

VMware Consolidated Backup framework relies on the Microsoft Windows operating system on which it resides to provide access to the necessary disks. The Windows operating system hosting the VMware Consolidated Backup framework may use the following components to connect to the storage:
  • Microsoft iSCSI initiator or 3rd party iSCSI initiator
  • 3rd party hardware iSCSI initiator
  • 3rd party networking hardware
  • 3rd party storage hardware
If there are connectivity issues from the Windows operating systems to a storage device, engage the 3rd party vendors for assistance. The VMware Consolidated Backup Framework does not interfere with the functionality of these 3rd party components.

Note: If the VMware Consolidated Backup Proxy Server is a virtual machine, see the previous section, Using Microsoft or 3rd Party iSCSI Initiators within a virtual machine guest operating system.
