Conversion of a physical source with software mirrors fails

Symptoms

  • Converter fails during the reconfiguration of a virtual machine when the source uses software mirrors.
  • You receive this error:

    Can't reconfigure a source that does not have system volume

Resolution

This issue occurs if the boot volume is mirrored and the mirrored volume does not have the same starting offset as the source volume. The conversion of mirrored partitions is successful with VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0 when the starting offset is the same. This is a regression from VMware Converter 3.0.x and is a known issue.

Note: If you perform a corrective action in any of the following steps, attempt reconfiguring the virtual machine or converting the physical machine again.

Reconfigure the virtual machine

  1. Use a partition utility to assign the boot flag to the correct partition in the resulting virtual machine. For a list of some utilities, see Increasing the size of a disk partition (1004071).
  2. Reconfigure the virtual machine.

Convert the physical source again

  1. Uninstall VMware vCenter Converter 4.0.
  2. Install VMware Converter 3.0.3. This can be found on the Converter download page.

  3. Convert the physical source again.
