Failure to create LUN snapshots when performing a Site Recovery Manager test failover on a CLARiiON array

Symptoms

When using EMC CLARiiON array and performing a Site Recovery Manager (SRM) test failover:

  • The Reconfiguring Storage stage does not get past 2%
  • LUN snapshots are not created on the array
  • The vmware-dr-#.log file contains this entry:

    [2009-03-30 16:05:26.581 'SecondarySanProvider' 4912 trivia] 'testFailover' returned <Response>
    [#3]   <ReturnCode>0</ReturnCode>
    [#3] </Response>
    [2009-03-30 16:05:26.581 'SecondarySanProvider' 4912 info] Return code for testFailover: 0
    [2009-03-30 16:05:26.581 'SecondarySanProvider' 4912 trivia] 'Prepare storage for group 'shadow-group-87' for recovery' took 41.675 seconds
    [2009-03-30 16:05:26.581 'BeginImageTest-Task' 4912 verbose] Error set to (dr.san.fault.ExecutionError) {
    [#3]    dynamicType = <unset>,
    [#3]    errorMessage = "Failed to create lun snapshots",
    [#3]    msg = ""
    [#3] }

Cause

When a test failover is requested, SRM analyzes every virtual machine in the protection group to identify which LUNs contain the files the virtual machines use. SRM then has the Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) request a snapshot of each of the identified LUNs.

EMC CLARiiON requires that every LUN in the consistency group be snapshotted together. If a LUN in the consistency group does not contain any virtual machine files, the SRA does not request a snapshot of that LUN and the entire operation fails.

Resolution

For a snapshot to be successfully taken, ensure that all LUNs in the consistency group contain a registered and protected virtual machine files.

Note: A similar error will be received if the maximum number of LUNs in a consistency group has been exceeded.

Additional Information

EMC Symmetrix has the same requirements when using SRDF/A (asynchronous) but not SRDF/S (synchronous).
