The ESX 4.x upgrade script requires an IDE CD-ROM device

Details

When you upgrade ESX 3.x hosts to ESX 4.x hosts by using the esxupgrade.sh script and the ESX 4.x Installation DVD, the CD-ROM device must be in IDE mode.

Solution

Set the device mode to IDE before you run the upgrade script on the ESX 3.x host. You set the device mode in the BIOS settings of the host.
  1. Reboot the ESX 3.x host.
  2. During startup, enter the BIOS.
To determine how to access the BIOS, refer to the computer manufacturer manual. You can usually enter the system BIOS on boot by pressing the F1, F2, F8, F10, or Delete key
    .
  3. Using the arrow keys, navigate to the drives list and set the DVD drive to IDE mode.
  4. Press Esc and select the Save and Exit options.
The ESX 3.x host reboots with the saved device settings. You can now run the esxupgrade.sh script. For information about running the script, see Performing an offline upgrade from ESX 3.x to ESX 4.0 on a local ESX host (1009440).
