Certain Linux virtual machines do not play sound after installing VMware Tools

Details

After installing and configuring VMware Tools on certain Linux guest operating systems such as RHEL 3 and Mandriva 2007, if you reboot the virtual machine and try to play an audio file, sound is not played.

Solution

After installing VMware Tools, update the modprobe configuration file (modprobe.conf, conf.modules, or modprobe.d, depending on your distribution) to revert to the sound alias as it was before VMware Tools installation.
For example, in modprobe.conf based distributions, check /etc/modprobe.conf.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall and /etc/modprobe.conf files for changes to the sound alias instance (such as addition of alias sound or alias sound-slot-0). If you find any such entries, revert to the sound alias mentioned before VMware Tools installation.
