Creating a static route for the VMware Channel Connection in a WAN environment
Purpose
This article provides information on setting up STATIC routing between the VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat server pair implemented in a WAN.
Resolution
It is necessary to create a STATIC route using the destination (channel of other server), a locked down mask of 255.255.255.255 with a gateway of the local Channel IP address (this means that only the Channel NIC can contact the other Channel IP and nothing else).
To implement static routes:
Note: For the static routes to be implemented, you must follow this procedure on both servers.
Note: Prior to performing these steps, ensure that the RRAS service is started and set to Automatic on both servers.
- Open Routing and Remote Access from Administrative Tools.
- Select the server name, click Action > Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access, which launches the configuration wizard.
- Choose Custom Configuration, LAN routing and make sure the RRAS service is started.
- Select the server again, navigate to IP Routing, and choose Static Routes.
- From the Action menu choose to create a new static route
- Select the VMware Channel interface, enter the remote VMware Channel IP followed by the mask 255.255.255.255 and the local machine gateway
Test the VMware channel routing using pathping -n Channel_IP command to ensure that all the packets are sent thorough the VMware Channel IP and not the public IP.

Additional Information
Microsoft Windows does not support more than one gateway on a server.
Further issues can arise if the STATIC route is implemented using an interface ID (the 0x number on a print route result). This interface ID cannot be used indefinitely, as it is a dynamic number that can increment each time a server is rebooted or a NIC is disabled and re-enabled making the route useless.
