Sysprep Customized Clones of Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Vista Virtual Machines Prompt For Network Location Selection Upon Power On (1008378)

Details

When virtual machines running Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Vista are cloned with Sysprep customization and powered on, a Set Network Location dialog box prompts you to select a network setting for the virtual machine. By default, the Public location network setting is selected for the cloned virtual machine.

Solution

Workaround: Before cloning, disable the Set Network Location wizard in the source virtual machine by adding the following key in the Registry Editor:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\NewNetworkWindowOff
For more information on Network and Sharing Center, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733147.aspx
After this workaround, the network profile public remains set on the cloned virtual machine.
