Option to generate IP address or virtual machine name using an application is always disabled

When customizing a Virtual Machine during deployment:

The option to generate an IP address using an external application is always disabled.
The option to generate a virtual machine name using an external application is always disabled.

The options appears in the user interface but are not selected because the feature is not supported or documented in VirtualCenter 2.x.

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 4.0.
