ASSERT Error When Powering on a Virtual Machine Using a Physical Serial Port

Details

If a virtual machine is configured with a physical serial port that is being used by a process on the host, the virtual machine might fail to power on with an ASSERT error.

Solution

There is no workaround. This error can be caused by a host process that is using the serial port without using the standard locking protocol. VMware Server uses the standard locking protocol for serial ports, and if VMware Server is able to obtain a lock, it starts using the port. However, if an application on the host does not use the standard locking protocol, the serial port cannot be prevented from being shared between the host and the guest. If this occurs, a core dump occurs when the virtual machine is powered on.
