Using a Remote Desktop Connection When Installing VMware Tools Causes the Installation to Stop Responding on Windows XP Guests

Details

If you use a Windows XP host or guest, and attempt to install or update VMware Tools by establishing a remote desktop connection (RDC) to run the VMware Tools installer, the installation freezes at the point where the SVGA drivers is being installed.

Solution

Do one of the following:
  • Connect to the virtual machine by using a VMware product, such as Workstation or VirtualCenter and install VMware Tools from within the VMware product.
  • Use a VNC connection rather than an RDC connection to install or update VMware Tools.
