Cannot Launch 3-D Games That Use DirectX on a Ubuntu 8.04 Host

Details

In Ubuntu 8.04, the NVIDIA kernel module does not match the core of the NVIDIA X driver. The result is that when you attempt to play a 3-D game in a Windows XP guest, you might get an error message Fail to initialize DirectX. Also, when you start Workstation, you might see a message Direct rendering is not available.

Solution

First, determine whether Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI) is enabled on your Linux host. Open a terminal window and run the following command:

$ glxinfo | grep direct

If the command returns direct rendering: No, it means that DRI is not enabled, and you will not be able to play the 3-D game.

You must remove xserver-xgl and install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers.
