Some Applications in Linux Guests Do Not Work in Unity Mode

Details

On Linux hosts with a Linux guest, you might not be able to see some guest applications in Unity mode. OpenOffice applications are known to have this limitation.

The Unity feature depends on being able to find out which executable represents the X window. When a guest X Window application does not provide this information, that guest window is not shown in Unity mode.

This issue affects Workstation 6.5.0 and 6.5.1.

Solution

If you notice that an application does not appear in Unity mode, do the following:
  1. Exit Unity mode.
  2. In the guest, start the application so that an application window appears.
  3. In the guest, start an X terminal emulator.

Use Alt+F2 for gnome-terminal or Alt+F2 for konsole.
  4. In the terminal emulator, enter the following command:

    xprop | grep -E '_NET_WM_PID|WM_COMMAND|WM_CLASS'
  5. When your mouse pointer changes to a cross-hair, click in the application window.
If you do not see relevant information about the window you clicked, then you have hit the limitation described in this article.
If you do see relevant information about the window, you might have discovered a new bug that you should report to VMware.
