Limitations on Volume Migration When You Import a Virtual or Physical Machine

Details

If you use File > Import to import a physical or virtual machine and you want to perform volume migration, the import fails if the source machine has more disks or virtual disks than the destination platform allows. Two situations can cause the Conversion wizard to give the error message Too many disks allocated for target:
  • If, for example, you choose a Workstation 6.5 virtual machine with 60 virtual disks as the source machine and try to convert it to a Workstation 4 virtual machine, the conversion fails because a Workstation 4 virtual machine cannot accommodate more than 7 virtual devices (disks) on its SCSI adapter.
  • If you choose the Create a separate disk for each volume option and the total number of volumes on all the source disks is more than the destination platform allows.

Solution

If you see the error message, try the following workarounds:
  • If you selected the Create a separate disk for each volume option, deselect this option.
  • Select fewer volumes to convert.
  • Select a destination platform that can accommodate more disks.
