Lab Manager MKS console browser plug-in on Windows can be installed only by a Windows administrator (1007339)
Details
On Microsoft Windows pre-Vista, users who are not administrators need administrator privileges to install a one-time MKS console browser plug-in to access the Lab Manager console. After installing this plug-in, any user can access the MKS console.
On Windows Vista and 7, you must be the administrator to install and use the MKS console browser plug-in, when the User Account Control (UAC) is enabled, by default.
If you do not follow the steps below, you may see this error if you are accessing Lab Manager's user interface on a Web browser running on Microsoft Windows Vista / 7:
Bad Handle 0x7B4, the handle is invalid
Bad Handle 0x7B4, the handle is invalid
Solution
To allow non-administrator users to use the MKS console browser plug-in while UAC is enabled:
- Add Lab Manager to Internet Explorer's list of Trusted Sites, or enable intranet settings for the website.
- Download and install the MKS plug-in when the browser prompts you to, following the UAC prompts.
Note: The console will probably crash the first time it is run under a non-administrator account.
- Run Internet Explorer as an administrator. Right-click the icon, select Run as administrator.
- View the console.
- Close Internet Explorer, and run as a regular user. The console now works for any user account.
Note: The MKS console requires write-access to the %temp% and %tmp% folders. If these have been re-directed to a non-default location, the console might continue to crash when run by non-administrators who do not have write-access to those folders. Each user should have read and write access to their temporary folders. For details on the the %temp% and %tmp% folders, see Microsoft's article Recognized Environment variables.
To manually install the Lab Manager MKS console browser plug-in for Internet Explorer, see Manually install/uninstall Internet Explorer MKS plugin for Lab Manager (1021554).
