Solution
Summary
This patch fixes the following issues:
-
The IBM FAStT arrays execute only one LUN Ownership transfer command (ModeSelect(2C) ) at a time. Subsequent ModeSelect(2C) commands will receive a CHECK_CONDITION, ASC/ASCQ x9136 error code. This fix serializes ModeSelect(2C) commands and allows failover to complete reliably, especially when more than one ESX Server is attached to an storage array. This is a critical patch and must be applied to all ESX Server hosts attached to IBM FAStT DS3000, DS4000, or DS5000 storage arrays.
- If there are intermittent SAN issues, the VMFS filesystem loses access to its journal block and suddenly all metadata operations such as file creation etc on the VMFS filesystems fail. With this fix, after the intermittent SAN conditions are resolved, the VMFS filesystem allocates a new journal block for itself, and metadata operations do not fail.

Patch Download and Installation
Note: All virtual machines on the host must be either shut down or migrated using VMotion before applying the patch. A reboot of the ESX Server host is required after applying this patch.
See the VMware Update Manager Administration Guide for instructions on using VMware Update Manager to download and install patches to automatically update ESX Server 3.0.3 hosts.
To update ESX Server 3.0.3 hosts when not using VMware Update Manager, download the most recent patch bundle from http://support.vmware.com/selfsupport/download/ and install the bundle using esxupdate from the command line of the host. For more information, see the ESX Server 3 Patch Management Guide .
