TCP Packets from a Source Windows 2000 Virtual Machine Stop Reaching the Destination Windows 2000 Virtual Machine Unless Zerocopy is Disabled

Details

TCP packets from a source Windows 2000 virtual machine do not reach the destination Windows 2000 virtual machine if the clients are POP3 applications, and if zerocopy is enabled in the .vmx file. This occurs due to an issue in NDIS drivers for Windows 2000 operating systems. Refer Microsoft KB 318871 for information on NDIS issue.

This issue impacts vmxnet2 driver on ESX Server 3.0.1, ESX Server 3.0.2, and ESX Server 3.5 Update 1 releases having virtual machines running on Windows 2000 guest operating systems.

Solution

To work around this issue, update virtual machines running Microsoft 2000 guest operating systems to Service Pack 4 based on Microsoft's recommendation, or disable zerocopy in the .vmx file, which impact network performance. To disable zerocopy , set ethernetX.features=0 in the source virtual machine's .vmx file.
