VMotion problem with Virtual Machines running on 64bit guests on AMD Barcelona servers and ESX 3.5/ESXi 3.5 Update 1 or Update 2

Details

VMware has identified an issue on systems with AMD Barcelona processors running ESX 3.5 or ESXi 3.5 Update 1 and Update 2. When VMotioning from or to one of these systems, the virtual machine might fail to respond with the following symptoms:
  • Virtual machines running Microsoft 64-bit Windows operating systems may experience a blue screen error with the message:

    mfehidk.sys PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

  • Virtual machines running Linux 64-bit operating systems might experience a panic
Note: Some customers have seen this behavior using anti-virus software in the previously-mentioned environments.

Solution

This issue is resolved in ESX 3.5 Patch ESX350-20080904-SG. For more information, see the ESX 3.5 Patch ESX350-20080904-SG Release Notes.
 
This individual patch is a component of ESX 3.5 Update 3. 
 
To resolve this issue, you must install the patch or the update.
