Troubleshooting application dependency and capture issues
Symptoms
- Certain files or registry keys are missing from the virtual application capture folder.
-
Deploying a virtualized application to a new system fails.
-
You receive an error message similar to:
-
Cannot find <resource_name>
-
Missing <file_resource_name>
-
-
Application times out during deployment.
-
Application does not start or connect after deployment
Resolution
To troubleshoot this issue, try each of these steps in order, and then determine whether the issue is resolved:
- Verify that the capture computer is clean. If the computer is not clean, it is possible that an application dependency is already installed. When the target application is installed, it does not need to install a dependency if the dependency already exists. ThinApp can only capture what is installed between the pre and post scans. Therefore. the capture process may not gather all the dependencies and virtualize them into the package. For more information, see Using a Clean Computer on page 12 of the VMware ThinApp User's Manual.
- Make a note of any components that are missing in the error messages on the deployment computer. Manually copy the requested files into the project folder from the capture environment, and then rebuild the project.
- Use the included dll_dump tool to compare the running processes on the capture computer against the processes running on the deployment computer. Compare the differences to determine if any files are still missing.
Note: This tool is useful when the application does not report the file names of missing components.
