Settings missing in deployed applications

Symptoms

  • Deployed applications do not retain settings from capture or start with defaults only
  • Icon or file-type associations are not created for the application

Resolution

Many applications do not create all required registry keys, settings, or .INI files during installation, including file-type associations. These are settings often generated when the application first launches.

When performing an application capture, use the following guidelines to ensure that Setup Capture properly records all the application settings and required components:
  • Install on a clean computer. For more information, see the Using a Clean PC for Capturing section of the VMware ThinApp User's Manual, version 4.0.1.
  • Use a base installation of the oldest version of Windows on which you plan to deploy the application.
  • Always run the application after its install completes at least once before you run the post-scan when capturing. This ensures any additional registry keys, settings, or .INI files are generated.
