Newly Installed RPMs Are Listed as Wrong or Duplicate Versions when System Time Is Rolled Back (1006967)

Details

During patch installation, if the current system time is set to a date and time prior to the date and time on which the last patch bundle was installed, the esxupdate utility lists the RPMs installed by the current patch installation under "Wrong or duplicate versions."

Solution

Before installing a patch bundle, ensure the system time is past the timestamp of the last installed patch.
  • Use the date command to obtain the current system time.
  • Use the esxupdate query command to obtain a listing of installed patches and their timestamps.

Note: VMware recommends you configure the ESX host with nptd to synchronize with an internal NTP clock source which is, in turn, synchronized with a straturm-1 clock source. This ensures secure and accurate time synchronization for auditing and operational purposes, including patching and logging functions. Also see Installing and Configuring NTP on VMware ESX Server (KB 1339).
