Setting the resource expiry and testing garbage cleanup functions in VMware vCenter Lab Manager
Symptoms
-
Templates, configuration files, or virtual machines have been removed, however the related files are still on the datastore
-
Storage usage seems excessive
-
Removed files are not cleaned up or deleted from storage
Resolution
To set the resource expiry and test garbage clean-up:
-
Ensure the storage lease settings are correct. For more information, see:
-
Reviewing the Resource Cleanup Tab in the Lab Manager 2.x User Guide
-
-
Verify that garbage collection is performed as expected:
-
Create a configuration containing one virtual machine and set the Storage Lease to the lowest setting (1 hour).
-
Take note of the storage location of the files for the virtual machine by following the steps in Identifying the storage location for a virtual machine (1006737).
-
Examine that storage location to confirm the existence of virtual machine files as described in Verifying that ESX virtual machine storage is accessible (1003751).
-
Wait for the length of time set in step 1 to pass.
Note: There may be an additional wait period due to the system setting Storage Server Garbage Collection Frequency. For more information, see:-
Reviewing the General Tab in the Lab Manager 2.x User Guide
-
Configuring General Preferences in the in the Lab Manager 3.x and 4.x User Guide.
-
-
When the appropriate amount of time has elapsed, view the same storage location again. The files no longer exist.
Note: If the files have not been removed, a restart of the VMware LM Monitor service may be required. For more information, see Storage page is not refreshing/updating (1002675).
