Changes in /etc/fstab are missing after upgrading VMware Tools

Symptoms

  • After upgrading VMware Tools, /etc/fstab does not reflect changes made
  • After uninstalling VMware Tools, changes made to /etc/fstab are no longer present

Resolution

This issue occurs when you upgrade VMware Tools.

As a workaround, make a copy of /etc/fstab before performing a VMware Tools upgrade and replace the fstab after the upgrade.

Note: This issue affects all the Linux guest operating systems that are supported in ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 and below.

This issue is resolved in ESX 3.5 Update 5. To download ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 5, see the VMware Download Center.

This issue may also occur if a virtual machine that was installed from an ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 host has an older version of VMware Tools. Ensure that you update all virtual machines to the latest version of VMware Tools.
