Troubleshooting login failures occurring on a virtual machine converted with VMware Converter

Symptoms

These issues may occur if a physical or virtual machine has been converted with VMware Converter:

  • You are unable to login successfully to the virtual machine.
  • You receive this error on boot:

    [Limited Virtual Memory]
Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small.

Resolution

This issue can occur if:
  • The drive letter of the system volume has changed.
  • A custom graphical identification and authentication (GINA) is installed.
  • Citrix software is installed
  • The security accounts manager (SAM) database file is damaged.

Validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment. These steps provide instructions or a link to a document. These steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Do not skip a step.

  1. Check to see to see if the drive letter assigned on the source for the Windows operating system is something other than C:. If Windows has been installed into another driver letter besides C:, it is necessary to modify the registry to correct this issue. For more information, see Unable to login to a Windows virtual machine after it has been converted with VMware Converter (1038657).

  2. Verify that the data in the virtual machine on the destination is not corrupted. A corrupted or incorrectly copied SAM file can prevent your credentials from being verified or can prevent the system from starting correctly. For more information, see Checking for disk corruption on the destination after using VMware Converter (1006559).
Note: If your problem still exists, please file a support request with VMware Support and note this KB Article ID (1006297) in the problem description. For more information on sending a request, see How to Submit a Support Request.
