Cannot start the VMware application after initial installation
Purpose
Resolution
Each step below provides instructions and a link to a document, for performing the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and to identify the proper resolution. They are also ordered in the most appropriate sequence to minimize data loss. After completing each step, try starting the application again. Work through each troubleshooting step in order, and do not skip a step.
- Confirm that your host operating system is supported by checking the VMware Compatibility Guide.
- Verify that you have sufficient permissions on the running operating system of the machine you are trying to install on. This usually requires administrative privileges. For more information, see Verifying sufficient permissions exist (1005410).
- Verify the VMware registration services are running on the host machine. These are required for virtualization products to run on a host operating system. For more information, see Determining the status of VMware host services (1003850).
- Confirm that none of the virtual machine files are locked by a third-party program. For more information, see Operation on File Failed with Portion of File Locked (1994).
- Verify that your operating system is in a healthy state. Corrupt/missing files or libraries in the operating system can prevent a successful install. For more information, see Verify the health of an operating system (1003956).
