Solution

Summaries and Symptoms

Issues fixed in this patch (and their relevant symptoms, if applicable) include:

  • An older version of msvcrt.dll might replace a higher version of msvcrt.dll during VMware Tools upgrade. This fix addresses the issue and replaces the msvcrt.dll only if a higher version is not present.

  • When users upgrade from GA to patch installations of ESX Server 3.0.x, the VMware Tools package is not upgraded.

Symptoms:  During a VMware Tools upgrade, older files are not replaced.

  • Compilation of guest drivers fails for the Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.04.1 guest operating systems as support for newer kernel is absent.

Symptoms: Compiling modules on Ubuntu 8.04 guest operating system fails with the following error message:
None of the pre-built vmmemctl modules……
Unable to build the vmmemctl module.
None of the pre-built vmhgfs modules……
Unable to build the vmhgfs module.
None of the pre-built vmxnet modules……
Unable to build the vmxnet module

Error messages occur when running the vmware-config-tools.pl script.
  • When installing VMware Tools on a Solaris 10 U5 virtual machine on ESX Server 3.0.3, the VMware Tools installation fails when configuring the X server.
  • Provide pre-built modules for VMware Tools for the 32-Bit and 64-Bit Ubuntu 8.04.1 virtual machines.
Symptoms: VMware Tools installation on a 32-Bit and 64-Bit Ubuntu 8.04.1 virtual machines generates the error message:
None of the pre-built modules vmmemctl modules for VMware tools is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmemctl
modules for your  system (you need to have a C compiler installed on  your system [yes]

Deployment Considerations

If you are using esxupdate, you must install 2nd-level dependencies before installing this patch. For details, see KB 1007060 (Patch Installation Using esxupdate Fails Because 2nd-Level Dependency Is Not Installed).

ESX303-200808403-SG is the second-level dependency of this patch. Before installing this patch, install the ESX303-200808403-SG  first.
