Windows 2000 Virtual Machine Stops at "Safe to turn off computer" Screen (1006)

Details

My Windows 2000 virtual machine does not power off after after I shut down the guest operating system. Instead, it halts the operating system at the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" screen. How can I power off the virtual machine?

Solution

In this situation, the virtual machine is not receiving a command to power off, and the Windows command to power off is not working properly.

To work around this problem, add the following line to the configuration file (.vmx) of the virtual machine:
gui.exitOnCLIHLT = TRUE

This line causes the virtual machine to power off automatically when you choose Start > Shut Down from the Windows guest.
