Guest customization in VirtualCenter 2.5 fails if TMP or TEMP environment variables have been modified

Symptoms

  • Customization of a Windows template fails after upgrading to VirutalCenter 2.5
  • Default Windows TMP  and/or TEMP environment variables have been moved to a different location
  • The guestcust.log file displays the error:

    Deleting directory C:\sysprep if it already exists
    Moving directory sysprep to C:\sysprep
    Move failed. Err: Access is denied.

    Access is denied.
    Rpci: Sending request='deployPkg.update.state 4 100
    T:\TEMP\vmware-imc\guestcust.log@Access is denied.'
    Rpci: Sent request='deployPkg.update.state 4 100
    T:\TEMP\vmware-imc\guestcust.log@Access is denied.', reply='Unknown command',
    len=15, status=0

    Note: This file is located in the TMP or TEMP directory on the guest. In this example the log is located in T:\TEMP\vmware-imc\guestcust.log .

Resolution

Currently, changing the TMP and/or TEMP environment variables is not supported. To customize a Windows virtual machine, ensure the environment variables are set to the Windows default:
  • TEMP - C:\Windows\Temp
  • TMP - C:\Windows\Temp
