Adding new licenses to an existing centralized environment

Purpose

This article provides details on activating new licenses and installing them along with existing licenses in your production environment.

Resolution

The below listed steps will provide instructions or links to documents to eliminate possible causes and take corrective action as necessary. the steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution.
 
You can follow couple of methods to combine new licenses into your existing production environment. 
 
Perform the tasks from one of the headings below.

Activate new licenses into a separate license file

  1. Create a new centralized license file on your VMware license portal activating the new available licenses. For more information, see Creating a Single Host and Centralized License file on the licensing portal (1005132).
  2. Copy this new license file into the License Server directory. For more information, see License Server Directory Support for Simplified License Management (7252734).

Activate total number of licenses into one consolidated license file

  1. Activate the new available licenses on your VMware license portal in a centralized license file. For more information, see Creating a Single Host and Centralized License file on the licensing portal (1005132).
  2. Consolidate the previously created centralized license file(s) with the new license file by selecting the license files to be combined and clicking Combine.
  3. Download the new consolidated license file and upload it to the License Server. For more information, see Installing ESX Server Licenses (1001383).
