Disabling VMware ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5 Evaluations

Purpose

This article provides steps to disable ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5 evaluations.

Resolution

VMware ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5 come with a built-in 60 day evaluation. The clock starts on the first day of installation and stops when either a commercial license is installed or whenever it expires after 60 days. If the clock stops due to expiration after 60 days the product no longer functions.

To disable evaluation on an ESX host and install a commercial license:
  1. Log in using VMware Infrastructure Client and click the host name.
  2. Click the Configuration tab and choose Licensed Features.
  3. Click Edit for License Source.

  4. In the dialog, select the appropriate means to license this ESX host. If the license if valid, this deactivates the evaluation mode.

  5. Click Administration, then the Licenses tab to confirm commercial licenses are activated.
To disable evaluation on VirtualCenter Server and install commercial licenses:
  1. Log in to VirtualCenter server via the VMware Infrastructure Client.
  2. Select Administration > VirtualCenter Management Server Configuration from the drop down menu.
  3. Deselect Evaluate VirtualCenter Server and configure the appropriate licensing option.
