Troubleshooting a License Server that has stopped responding

Symptoms

  • No licenses are installed on the VMware Infrastructure Client
  • License Server is not responding

Purpose

This article provides steps to eliminate common causes of non-responsive License Server.

Resolution

The below listed steps will provide instructions or links to documents to eliminate possible causes and take corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution.

To troubleshoot and remove common causes that lead to the License Server not responding:
  1. Ensure appropriate services are running. For more information, see Starting License Server and VirtualCenter Server Services (1005608).
  2. Ensure VirtualCenter server can communicate with the License Server in case they are installed on separate systems. VMware recommends that they are installed on the same server. For more information, see Testing network connectivity with the Ping command (1003486).

Note: If your problem still exists after trying the steps in this article, please file a support request with VMware Support and note this KB Article ID in the problem description. For more information, see How to Submit a Support Request.
