Ensuring vCenter Server is the only VMware product installed on the host

Purpose

This article guides you through the process of determining which VMware products are installed on a vCenter Server host. Conflicts can arise when additional VMware products are installed, due to differing libraries and system requirements, which may cause problems with deploying templates or cloning.

Resolution

Assess which programs are installed, via the Microsoft Windows Add\Remove Programs interface:
  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Open Add\Remove Programs.
  3. Examine the list of programs. Only these VMware programs are to be installed:
    • For VirtualCenter 2.0.x:
      • VMware License Server
      • VMware Tools VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client 2.0
      • VMware VirtualCenter Server 2.0

    • For vCenter Server 2.5.x:
      • VMware Capacity Planner for VirtualCenter
      • VMware Converter
      • VMware Converter Enterprise for VirtualCenter
      • VMware Infrastructure Update
      • VMware License Server
      • VMware Tools
      • VMware Update Manager
      • VMware VirtualCenter Server

    • For vCenter Server 4.x
      • VMware vCenter Capacity IQ
      • VMware vCenter Converter Standalone
      • VMware vCenter Converter Enterprise
      • VMware vSphere Client
      • VMware License Server (only necessary if you have ESX 3.5.x hosts)
      • VMware Tools
      • VMware vCenter Update Manager
      • VMware vCenter Server

    • For vCenter Server 5.x
      • VMware vCenter Server
      • VMware vSphere Client
      • VMware VSphere Web Client Server
      • VMware vSphere Update Manager
      • VMware ESXi Dump Collector
      • VMware Syslog Collector
      • VMware Auto Deploy
      • VMware vSphere Authentication Proxy
Assess which programs are installed, via the %ProgramFiles% directory listing:
  1. Click Start > Run, type %ProgramsFiles%\VMware to navigate to the directory and press Enter. For 64-bit only operating systems, also go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware directory.
  2. Examine the sub-directories. Only these VMware directory names are to be listed:
    • For VirtualCenter Server 2.0.x:
      • VMware License Server
      • VMware Tools
      • VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client 2.0
      • VMware VirtualCenter 2.0

    • For vCenter Server 2.5.x:
      • VMware Infrastructure
      • VMware Converter
      • VMware License Server
      • VMware Tools

    • For vCenter Server 4.x:
      • Infrastructure
      • VMware vCenter Converter Standalone
      • VMware License Server
      • VMware Tools

    • For vCenter Server 5.x
      • Infrastructure
      • VMware Tools

Note: The legacy VMware License Server is required to manage your ESX 3.x host machines on the vCenter Server 4.x and  vCenter Server 5.0. You may use an existing VMware License Server or install and configure a new instance of a VMware License Server. For more information, see Licensing ESXi 5.0 and vCenter Server 5.0 (2004326).
VMware program or directory listings containing Perl, VIX, SDK, API, VCB, or Backup indicate additional programs that have been installed that may cause conflict.
