Verifying purchased licenses meet current need

Symptoms

  • Missing licenses on the portal
  • Incorrect amount of licenses showing on the portal
  • Incorrect product type on the license portal

Resolution

It is important to ensure that product type and amount of licenses were purchased according to current need. If the type selected during purchasing was incorrect or if the number of licenses are not sufficient, there is a problem getting the system into production.

Product Type

Ensure to select the correct product from the list showing on VMware website.

Furthermore, you can implement your production environment in Standalone or Centralized environments. The implementation plan may affect your purchasing budget.

  • Standalone or Host-Based Licensing – Each server is licensed and managed individually.
  • Centralized or Server-Based Licensing – Each server is connected to, licensed and managed by VirtualCenter server. This scenario requires that you purchased a VirtualCenter license along with your required amount of ESX Server 3 licenses. When using this licensing model, a single license file is stored on a license server, which manages your entire license pool and makes licenses available to one or more hosts.

License Count

You must also ensure sufficient number of licenses are purchased. One VMware ESX Server 3 (VMware Infrastructure 3) license supports two physical CPUs on the ESX host. Use this to calculate how many VMware Infrastructure 3 licenses need to be purchased to manage the total number of CPUs in the environment. You purchase licenses on a per processor basis, which means that you need to indicate the total number of processors, not hosts, that run the products. You can deploy and redeploy the purchased processor capacity on any combination of hosts.
