Cannot Power on virtual machines on an ESX host

Symptoms

  • Can't power on virtual machine
  • Unable to start a virtual machine
  • Not enough licenses installed

Purpose

This article helps you troubleshoot and eliminate common causes of unlicensed ESX hosts which lead to not being able to power on a virtual machine.

Resolution

When attempting to power on a virtual machine, especially the first virtual machine on a newly-installed ESX host, VI Client may display an error message similar to the following:

There are not enough licenses installed to perform this operation.
Somehow the ESX host is in an unlicensed state. The most common causes and possible solutions are:
  1. ESX Server License Type is set to 'Unlicensed'. For more information, see Setting the ESX Server Edition while licensing the ESX host (1005485).
  2. All available licenses are in use.

Using VI Client, check the state of installed licenses by clicking Administration and the Licenses tab.

  3. Incorrect License Source is selected. For more information, see Configuring a License Source on an ESX host (1005486).
  4. Not enough licenses are installed. For more information, see Not enough licenses installed (1005265).
