Verifying sufficient permissions exist

Symptoms

  • Error stating you do not have permission
  • Error stating that root is required

Purpose

This article provides steps to verify that proper permissions exist to administer/install a VMware product

Resolution

For Windows:

  • Windows XP: To ensure that you have Administrator permissions, follow the instructions in Step 1 of Microsoft's Knowledge Base article 951244.
  • Windows Vista: To log on as an administrator, see Microsoft's article Change a user's account type.
  • Windows 7: To log on as an administrator, see Microsoft's article How do I log on as an administrator?.

Note: If you are using Vista, or a version of Windows that has User Access Control (UAC), disable it temporarily.

For Linux:

Root privileges are required for most VMware-related tasks. Perform one of the following:

  • Log in as root.
  • Run su - or sudo -i to become root.

For Mac OS:

MacOS prompts you for an administrative user's credentials when required during the install.

To verify you are an administrator:

  1. Click System Preferences > Accounts
  2. Click on your user icon on the left.
  3. If your user has Allow user to administer this computer selected, you have sufficient access to install VMware Fusion.
