VMware VirtualCenter console displays a handshake error

Symptoms

  • The virtual machine becomes unresponsive
  • The following error appears on the console:

    handshake lost connection to vm_name.vmx

Resolution

There are two known causes for this issue:
 
To resolve the first, you must remove and re-add the virtual machine to the VMware VirtualCenter inventory.
 
To perform this task, see the Adding and removing virtual machines section of the Basic System Administration Guide .
 
Secondly, this error can occur while booting a 64bit virtual machine that is incorrectly configured as 32bit. To resolve this issue, edit the settings of the virtual machine and correctly specify the guest operating system.
