Installation of ESX Server Fails on HP BL685 if the Emulex Card Is Disabled from the BIOS

Details

When installing ESX Server 3.0.x on the HP BL685, ESX Server will fail on boot if one of the onboard Emulex Fibre Channel controllers is deactivated from the BIOS. The following error message is displayed:

kernel panic : Fatal exception

Solution

Do not disable the Emulex HBA from the HP system before installing ESX Server. If the SAN is connected and visible from the Emulex card, you can select a SAN LUN instead of the local controller for the installation. You must select Keep Existing VMFS Datastore to prevent the existing VMFS datastore from being modified by the installer.
