Installing and configuring the Backup Exec VMware Consolidated Backup Integration Module
Purpose
This articles provides steps to set up VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) with Backup Exec 11d.
Resolution
To install and configure the Backup Exec VCB Integration Module:
- Download the Integration Module for the version of the VMware Consolidated Backup at http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/drivers_tools.html.
- Save the zip file to C:\ of the VCB Proxy Server.
- Unzip the file to the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework directory. Unzipping the integration module creates a backupexec directory within the VMware Consolidated Backup Framework directory.
Note: This folder has a ReadMe.html file that has important information for setting up BackupExec to work with VCB, as well as some troubleshooting tips.
-
Open a command prompt and cd to the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework directory\backupexec directory.
-
Run install.bat.
-
Accept the default path for the VCB installation folder by pressing Enter twice and typing y when asked about the Configuration Path.
-
When prompted to review the configuration file, press y.
-
Make the following changes to the config.js file:
-
Modify the path to where the virtual machines backup directory will reside. By default, it is C:\mnt. You can either leave the default or enter an alternate path.
-
Enter the FQDN or IP address of the VirtualCenter or ESX host hosting the virtual machines. Ensure that this is recorded in the DNS.
-
Enter the account and password of the VirtualCenter Server or the ESX host that you are trying to connect to.
-
-
Save and close.
-
Follow the prompts.
-
Exit the command prompt windows and restart the Backup Exec services. From within the Backup Exec Manager, click Tools > Backup Exec Services… > Restart all services.
Note: The VCB proxy server must be able to resolve Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the virtual machines to be backed up.
Creating a Backup Job for VCB
To create a backup job for VCB:
-
Start the Backup Exec Manager.
-
Click the Job Setup tab.
-
Click the New Job link under the Backup Tasks section. Enter a name for the job.
-
Select the check box next to the VCB proxy server.
-
Click the Settings > General link and choose one of the following possible backup methods :
-
Copy
-
Full – Using modified time
-
Differential – Using modified time
-
Incremental – Using modified time
-
Working Set – Last accessed in last (X) days
Note: Make sure the Use Microsoft change journal, if available, is not selected.
-
-
Click OK.
-
Verify that the Backup files and directories by following junction points is selected in the Settings > Advanced link.
-
Click the Settings > Pre/Post Commands link and enter the following in the Pre-command field:
"C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup
Framework\backupexec\pre-backup.bat" FullVMBackup
win2003b.vmeduc.com-fullVM
where FullVMBackup is the backup job name followed by the virtual machine's IP address or FQDN.
Note: Each virtual machine to be backed up is separated by at least one space. -
In the Post-Command field, enter the following:
"C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup
Framework\backupexec\post-backup.bat" FullVMBackup
Note: A FullVM backup exports each virtual disk to the VCB Proxy. Although the export compresses out most of the unused space on the virtual disks to the proxy, the proxy needs to have enough space for the export step of the backup to succeed.
-
Select the options shown in the following:
The Backup can now be initiated within Backup Exec Manager. The job monitor in Backup Exec Manager gives you the job's progress.
Note: To create a new backup job or modify the existing job for a file level backup, perform the same steps as above, but omit the -fullVM portion of the virtual machine's FQDN in the pre-command. This mounts the virtual machine on the VCB proxy allowing you to traverse the files system and select the files you intend to back up.
