Installing VMware Tools in VMware Fusion fails

Symptoms

  • Installing VMware Tools in Fusion fails
  • You receive the error:

    Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file D:\vmwaretools.msi

Resolution

This error may be generated when you upgrade VMware Tools to a new version.
 
VMware recommends uninstalling the old version of VMware Tools from guest operating system before installing the new version.
 
To uninstall and upgrade VMware Tools for Windows Vista:
  1. Power on the Windows Vista virtual machine.
  2. Click Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select VMware Tools and click Uninstall.
  4. Restart the Windows Vista guest operating system.
  5. Choose Install VMware Tools from the Virtual Machine menu.

    If the VMware Tools installer does not launch automatically, see Troubleshooting VMware Tools in Fusion (1014522).
To uninstall and upgrade VMware Tools for Windows XP:
  1. Power on the Windows XP Virtual Machine
  2. Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click VMware Tools.
  4. Click Remove.
  5. Restart the guest operating system.
  6. Choose Install VMware Tools from the Virtual Machine menu.

    If the VMware Tools installer does not launch automatically, see Troubleshooting VMware Tools in Fusion (1014522).
     
  7. Restart guest operating system.
