Benign Error Message on initrd Recreation During Upgrade to ESX Server 3.5 Update 1 or higher Using esxupdate (1004321)
Details
The following error messages might appear (and be logged in /var/log/esxcfg-boot.log ) while upgrading to ESX Server 3.5 Update 1 or higher using the esxupdate utility:
INFO: | 2008-03-08 20:33:48 (2349) ERROR: Execution of '/sbin/vmware-mkinitrd -f -v /tmp/vmware.1.tmp '2.4.21-37.0.2.ELvmnix'' failed. See log messages above.
INFO: | 2008-03-08 20:33:48 (2349) ERROR: Could not write out new initrds.
INFO: | 2008-03-08 20:33:48 (2349) ERROR: /usr/sbin/esxcfg-boot failed, examine /var/log/vmware/esxcfg-boot.log for details.
Solution
The error messages are benign and can be safely ignored if the upgrade succeeds. The initrd image does get recreated successfully.
If the upgrade fails and you see this error, the system will typically not boot next time.
As a permanent solution, see ESX Server 3.5, Patch ESX350-200806402-BG: Update to the Service Console Kernel (1005217).
