This patch fixes the following issues:
-
Power On / Off Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) traps are generated for virtual machines during VMotion.
-
Unable to install VMware Tools on virtual machines via Web Access because VMware Tools state shows as not running rather than not installed.
-
Unable to unregister powered-off virtual machines from the ESX Server host when in maintenance mode.
-
Some ESX Host Agent patches for ESX Server 3.0.x hosts might overwrite configuration changes made by VirtualCenter 2.5, which causes the ESX Server host to go into a non-responsive state. This patch provides a fix to the workaround in KB 1004137 .
Solution
Symptoms
The following issues occur without this patch:
- During VMotion, SNMP trap power OFF messages are generated in the source ESX Server host, and SNMP trap power ON messages are generated in the target ESX Server host.
- In Web Access, VMware Tools cannot be installed on a virtual machine because because Install VMware Tools link does not appear.
- Users trying to unregister virtual machines on an ESX Server host in maintenance mode might see the error: A general system error:Invalid fault.
-
ESX Server 3.0.x hosts in a VirtualCenter 2.5 environment might stop responding after applying hostd patches.
Download Instructions
3. Create a local depot directory.
# mkdir -p /var/updates
Note: VMware recommends that you use the updates directory.
4. Change your working directory to /var/updates.
# cd /var/updates
The md5 checksum output should match the following:
1e97e703dd95f9aadf30192246095d0e ESX-1004182.tgz
7. Extract the compressed tar archive:
# tar -xvzf ESX-1004182.tgz
8. Change to the newly created directory, /var/updates/ESX-1004182:
# cd ESX-1004182
Installation Instructions
After you download and extract the archive, and if you are in the directory that you previously created, use the following command to install the update:
# esxupdate update
To run esxupdate from a different directory, you must specify the bundle path in the command:
# esxupdate -r file://<directory>/ESX-1004182 update
For example, if the host is called depot:
# esxupdate -r file:///depot/var/updates/ESX-1004182 update
During the update process, logs appear on the terminal. You can specify the verbosity of esxupdate logs by using the -v option as shown below.
# esxupdate -v 10 file://<directory>/ESX-1004182 update
For more information how to use esxupdate, see the Patch Management for ESX Server 3 tech note at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_esxupdate.pdf .
