Checking media integrity for vCenter Server installations and upgrades

Symptoms

  • vCenter Server Installation errors before completion.
  • vCenter Server Upgrade errors before completion.
  • vCenter Server Installation fails to complete.
  • vCenter Server Upgrade fails to complete.
  • You see this error:

    Database version id '<id>' is incompatible with this release of vCenter Server

  • The installation appears to complete, but when starting the vCenter Server you see a message similar to this:

    Database version id '<id>' is incompatible with this release of vCenter Server

Purpose

This document guides you through confirming the integrity of media used for vCenter Server Installation.

Resolution

To check the integrity of the vCenter Server installer downloaded from VMware:

  1. Create an MD5 checksum of the downloaded vCenter Server installer. For more information, see Using MD5 Checksums
  2. Compare the newly created MD5 checksum with the MD5 checksum published by VMware
    • If the checksums match, the download is good, continue the vCenter Server installation.
    • If the checksums do not match, download the Installer again. Consider these alternatives::
      • If there is a choice of file types to download, i.e. exe or zip , try the other type(s).
      • Use a different web browser.
      • Use a different program for downloading.
      • Use a different computer and/or different Operating System (perhaps using a virtual machine).
    • Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the checksums match, and continue installing vCenter Server.
