Collecting diagnostic information for Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM)
Details
VMware Technical Support routinely request diagnostic information from you when a support request is handled. This diagnostic information contains product specific logs and configuration files from the host on which the product is run. The information is gathered using a specific script or tool for each product.
This article provides procedures for obtaining diagnostic information for Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM) 2.x.
The diagnostic information collected can then be uploaded to VMware Technical Support. To uniquely identify your information, use the Support Request (SR) number you received when you opened your Support Request.
- Instructions for opening a support request can be found online at www.vmware.com/support/policies/howto.html
- Instructions for uploading your support files can be found online at Uploading diagnostic information to VMware (1008525)
- Instructions for obtaining diagnostic information for other VMware products can be found online at Collecting diagnostic information for VMware products (1008524)
Solution
To collect Connection Server logs:
Note: Only the Virtual Desktop Manager version 2.1 and higher include this feature from the start menu for theConnection Server:
Click Start > Programs > VMware > Generate View Connection Server Log Bundle.
To manually collect the diagnostic information using the support script:
- Open a command prompt. For more information, see Opening a command or shell prompt (1003892).
-
Change to the DCT folder in the VDM installation folder. The location varies depending on which component is installed.
-
Connection Server, type: cd C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VDM\Server\DCT
-
Desktop access device, type: cd C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VDM\Client\DCT
-
Virtual desktop, type: cd C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VDM\Agent\DCT
-
-
Run the following command to execute the script:
cscript vdm-support.vbs -
When the script finishes, it informs you of the output filename and location.
Notes:
- The start menu shortcut for gathering logs is only available for the Connection Server, not the other components, like Client, Agent, View Composer. For more information, on gathering logs for View Composer, see Collecting Diagnostic Information for VMware View Manager (1007611).
- Restarting the VDM Connection Server service is never required for gathering logs, only for turning up the log level in VDM 2.0.
